Health & Nutrition

At GCCSA, Inc., children’s nutrition is a top priority. We ensure that enrolled children receive optimal nutrition to support their growth and well-being, while fostering a positive environment where they can develop healthy eating habits.

Our Head Start (HS) and Early Head Start (EHS) Centers serve nutritious meals and snacks through our participation in the Child and Adult Care Food Program. We establish smart eating habits by:

  • Providing nutritiously balanced meals: breakfast, lunch and snacks.
  • Serving meals and snacks to children individually and allowing children second servings from the vegetable, fruit, grain, and milk groups.
  • Encouraging children to feed themselves, explore new foods, and make choices about what they eat by participating in family-style meals.
  • Providing special dietary meals as prescribed by a physician or as a family preference.

What is the Child and Adult Care Food Program?

Health Services

Health is the cornerstone of school readiness. A child’s overall well-being and development are essential for them to grow into a happy, curious learner. We partner with families to support children’s growth by offering comprehensive health screenings, including hearing, and vision completed annually by our Health Specialist who are certified nurses.

Head Start is required to comply with Texas Health (TH) Steps mandates. Within the first 30 days of enrollment, GCCSA staff verify whether a child is current on preventative and primary medical and dental care. Our goal is to ensure that each child has continuous, accessible care, referred to as a “dental home” and a “medical home.” Additionally, we ensure that all enrolled children complete an annual physical, a biannual dental exam, and have age-appropriate, up-to-date immunizations, as required by Texas law.
